The Four Falling out of Step with the Times

Tứ trụ bán chậm Thumb

Excellence and strong sales are sometimes two parallel lines that never meet. In the car market, every month, every quarter, every half year, a new ranking gets called out. Not the sweet “Best-Selling Cars” list, but the bitter “Slowest-Selling Cars” one, where unfamiliar names get to stand shoulder to shoulder, sharing the same quiet ache: falling out of step with the times.

Ford Mustang Mach-E
Isuzu Mu-X
Hyundai Elantra
Suzuki Jimny

Better to be mentioned than forgotten entirely. These four names, the pillars of slow sales, share one story: the gap between product philosophy and market taste. If we had to pick one pillar to hold up as a mirror for the other three, Jimny deserves that spot. Of the four names, Jimny is the one that stays absolutely true to itself, and that is exactly why it is the loneliest.

Suzuki Jimny: A Lone Journey, No Compromise

In the dance of off-road terrain, Jimny stands proud, a four-wheeled poem written in the language of mountains and hills. It was never built to please the masses. From the first generation in 1970, powered by a 360cc engine, through decade after decade, Jimny has stayed loyal to one single philosophy: simple, practical, and uncompromising in the face of terrain. The separate “body-on-frame” chassis, the boxy, squared-off shape that helps drivers judge exactly where each wheel sits, the upright windows that maximize visibility: every detail on the Jimny serves a function, never decoration.

  • Suzuki Jimny, one version: 789 million VND
  • Dimensions 3,480 x 1,645 x 1,720 mm
  • Three doors, 4 seats, body-on-frame chassis
  • 1.5L engine, 105 hp, 130 Nm of torque
  • Four-wheel drive, off-road purpose in mind
  • The Suzuki Jimny’s only real rival is itself

That very purity of self is the biggest barrier keeping Jimny from blending into the multi-part symphony of urban life. A society needs a multitasking machine, one that can carry the whole family, run errands, and go out for fun all at once. Jimny’s 2+2 seating is practical to the point of severity, produced in limited numbers, and ends up as a luxury scent for the “artistic soul” rather than a tool for making a living.

Jimny Vietnam

Suzuki isn’t wrong.
Jimny isn’t wrong.
The buyers certainly aren’t wrong.
So what’s wrong here?

Jimny is simply standing in the wrong place, in a market where the “5-seat, high-clearance, do-it-all” formula is the common tongue. With the specialized nature of a true off-road warrior, Jimny only calls out to kindred spirits, the ones who want, every once in a while, to taste the solitary journey through untamed land.

Ford Mustang Mach-E: A Legend Out of Place

If Jimny falls out of step because it is so specialized, Mustang Mach-E falls out of step because it carries a name too big for a body too new. Ford bet on more than half a century of heritage from the Mustang name, an American cultural icon known for the legendary roar of its V8 engine, and wrapped that legacy in a smooth, all-electric SUV: no exhaust smoke, no engine roar. To the nostalgic, that is a quiet betrayal. To the pragmatic, it’s an expensive gamble made in an era of tightened belts.

  • Ford Mustang Mach-E: 1.699 billion VND
  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive, output of 395 hp
  • Dimensions 4,713 x 1,881 x 1,627 mm
  • Coupe-style silhouette, strongly sporty
  • Dense comfort features, no shortage of technology
  • The model marking Ford’s 30th anniversary in Vietnam

Mach-E arrived in Vietnam right as the electric-car conversation was still an unfinished debate between skepticism and hope. Officially imported from Mexico, without a charging network strong enough to call its own, and priced, even after deep cuts, still closer to a “toy for enthusiasts” than a “car for daily driving.”

Launched at 2.599 billion VND, even after a shocking price adjustment slashed it down to just 1.699 billion, Mustang Mach-E has steadily kept its seat on the slow-sellers list, at every point in time.

The image of the “wild mustang” roaring furiously down racetracks, along boulevards, into video games, and through popular culture has faded into the past. Perhaps the rare few who do buy a Ford Mustang Mach-E need to satisfy two conditions: they once drove or rode in a Ford Mondeo or Ford Laser back in the 2000s, and they want to choose themselves a pricey keepsake, hoping to borrow a little Mustang strength to keep galloping at an age when the legs aren’t as fast, and the bow isn’t as straight as the steering wheel anymore.

Isuzu Mu-X: Content With Happiness in the Shadows

Mu-X carries a quiet paradox: durable enough that nobody doubts it, and yet quiet enough that nobody mentions its name.

A fuel-efficient diesel engine, near-divine off-road capability thanks to its Rough Terrain Mode, and lower long-haul running costs than its segment rivals: Mu-X is the kind of car built for practical people. Traders who need to haul passengers and cargo, people who live along rough roads, or customers who have long trusted Isuzu trucks and believe absolutely in Isuzu’s durability.

  • Isuzu Mu-X, full-option version: 1.269 billion VND
  • Dimensions 4,850 x 1,870 x 1,875 mm
  • Rugged 1.9L diesel engine, four-wheel drive, 7 seats
  • Handles city streets, highways, and rough terrain alike
  • A rich suite of ADAS driver-assistance technology
  • Breezes through the Slalom test and the Moose test

To be fair, the Isuzu name has sunk deep into Vietnamese consciousness through decades of trucks, and no one knows when that impression will fade. The 7-seat, high-clearance SUV segment is both the most beloved and the most fiercely contested right now, and for years to come, even with a light “cosmetic” refresh in its new design language, Isuzu Mu-X still isn’t enough to convince customers to pay up.

Isuzu Mu-X-2022 đánh giá

In June 2026, only 8 Mu-X units were registered, bringing cumulative sales for the first half of the year to 82 units, the lowest of any gasoline or diesel model on the market. Is there any sadness greater than tonight’s?

Mu-X isn’t short on diesel. Mu-X is only short on a price attractive enough to pull buyers out from under the shadow of the Everest, the Fortuner, the Destinator. For everything it does behind the wheel, the Isuzu Mu-X suits the seasoned driver, someone who has been through the wars, who knows the car’s every weakness and strength the way they know themselves, who can command it “up when they want, down when they need” with a single hand. No matter the terrain: green hills or black grass.

Hyundai Elantra: Wrong Timing in a Changing of the Guard

Before the 7th-generation Elantra was unveiled to the public, an undercurrent had already been building at Hyundai’s Namyang Research and Development Center. Across 3.3 million square meters of land, 200 engineers and designers spent 36 months in continuous creative work to carry Elantra into a new era.

Elantra N Line, the sportiest version of the lineup, has been steadily carving out its place in the affordable sports-sedan market. In the US, N Line accounts for 15% of Elantra sales. In Europe, Elantra N Line posted an impressive 32% growth in 2023. In China, the high-performance “N” version of the Hyundai Elantra, launched in 2023, set off an earth-shaking explosion within the community of gasoline-blooded enthusiasts.

And Vietnam?

  • Hyundai Elantra N Line: 769 million VND
  • Dimensions 4,675 x 1,825 x 1,430 mm
  • 1.6L turbo engine, 204 hp, 265 Nm of torque
  • Lightweight chassis, low center of gravity, large wheels
  • Sharp, angular front and rear, strongly sporty character
Danh gia Hyundai Elantra

In June 2026, Elantra sold only 18 units, bringing first-half sales to 204 cars, a number that reflects a decline not just of Elantra itself, but of the entire sedan lineage. The sedan war has now shrunk down to a two-horse race between the Honda City and the Toyota Vios.

Vietnamese buyers once loved the sedan as a symbol of polish and success. But as similarly priced 5-seat, high-clearance crossovers kept multiplying, the “dignified” feel of a sedan gave way to the practicality of a higher-riding car, with its commanding view and flexible cabin space.

Hyundai Elantra isn’t outdated in style or technology. It simply stands outside the center of a shift in taste that no single design update could turn around on its own. All that’s left is to wait for the east wind.

The Four Pillars of Slow Sales: How Long Will the Slump Last?

Standing together on the Slow-Sellers Toplist, Mach-E, Mu-X, Elantra, and Jimny all reveal the same mismatch: a gap between product philosophy and consumer culture.

  • Mach-E falls out of step because it arrived a step ahead while the infrastructure hasn’t caught up.
  • Mu-X falls out of step because it stays loyal to old values in an era that favors image.
  • Elantra falls out of step as the sedan’s stage keeps closing its curtain with no ending in sight.
  • Jimny, the most emblematic of all, falls out of step because it steadfastly refuses to compromise.
Top 10 lowest selling cars of H1

Vietnamese people have a saying: “when you enter a house, follow its customs.” A car, no matter how prestigious the design studio that conceived it, no matter how much heritage it carries, has to learn to listen to the market’s signals once it enters, or accept standing on the sidelines of the game.

A manufacturer gives a car its birth, its name, its spirit. But it’s the market, the buyers swiping their cards month after month, that truly holds the power of life and death, sometimes cruel enough to end a model’s life while it’s still in its “green spring,” while there’s still a road ahead it hasn’t finished traveling…

In the car game, survival was never a matter of cheap or expensive. It comes down to who actively bends with the current, and who chooses to stand still and hold onto their own identity, becoming a legend to the few, rather than the center of attention for the crowd.
